What is the process?

The first step in becoming a member of the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office is completing the initial application.

Applicants initial application is reviewed to confirm if they meet the minimum requirements and have no disqualifying factors. If so, the applicant is notified to pick up the PHS and will have 14 days to complete it.

Applicants appear in front of a five-member board in formal business attire. They are asked scenario-based questions and graded on their appearance, communication skills, judgment, and logical reasoning.

Submit a complete and accurate Personal History Statement to proceed to a background investigation, which includes employer, reference, financial, and driving checks. This process takes 2-4 months.

If you are approved at this phase, you will be tendered a conditional offer of employment.

You must complete a psychological written test and be interviewed by a psychologist. Applicants previously licensed by TCOLE with less than a 180-day break in full-time service are not required by TCOLE to take another psychological exam.

Your physical and medical conditions are evaluated to ensure you can function safely as a GCSO Deputy or Detention Officer.

You will be required to provide samples and these are analyzed to detect the use of illegal drugs.

Patrol Deputies, Detention Officers, and 911 Communications work a 12-hour shift.

GCSO allows members to display tattoos determined by the Chief Deputy as appropriate for the business. Members are prohibited from having tattoos on any part of their hands, neck, face, head, eyelids, mouth, and ears with the following exceptions:
1. Tattoo of one wedding band on a ring finger;
2. Permanent facial makeup on the eyebrows, eyeliner, and lips that are business appropriate.
3. The Chief Deputy may approve small and inconspicuous tattoos that do not diminish or distract from the professional appearance of the member or applicant. Some tattoos, body art, and brands are prejudicial to good order and are prohibited by all members, regardless of visibility. Anything extremist, indecent, sexiest, or racist implies a negative bias toward any group or individual, contrary to law enforcement or contrary to our agency values.
Generally, tattoos on the arms are approved if deemed appropriate by the Chief Deputy and would not be scary to a child victim, i.e., skulls or scary clowns.

Facial Hair: mustaches, goatees, and beards are permissible (unless participating in Honor Guard duties) within the following guidelines:
1. All facial hair will be neatly trimmed, groomed, and no more than 1/4 inch in length.
2. Members wearing facial hair shall begin the growth during their time off.
3. Supervisors will ensure all facial hair is of professional appearance. Any beard, Mustache, or goatee that is uneven in growth, sparse, patchy, and untidy in form or appearance is not professional looking or authorized.
Any facial hair deemed unprofessional will be required to be shaven.

Applicant has been convicted of the offense of driving while intoxicated (MB), driving under the influence of drugs (MB) within the last 10 years

1. Must not be under criminal investigation or have any pending criminal charges.
2. Must not have been convicted, plead guilty or nolo contendere, placed on probation or deferred adjudication for any felony (civilian or military).
3. Must not have been convicted, plead guilty or nolo contendere, placed on probation or deferred adjudication for any Class A Misdemeanor (civilian or military).
4. Must not have been convicted, plead guilty or nolo contendere, placed on probation or deferred adjudication for a Class B Misdemeanor (civilian or military) within the last 10 years.
5. Must not have ever been convicted of family violence, public lewdness, indecent exposure or prostitution.
6. Must not be on probation for any crime.

1. Arrests or criminal acts not identified in the above category will be evaluated case by case and may be cause for rejection based on the classification of offense, circumstances, recency, and age of the applicant at the time of the offense.
2. The applicant must show proof of final disposition on ALL arrests (not guilty, dismissed, etc., from the court of jurisdiction.

1. The applicant must have a valid driver’s license.
2. Applicant must not have any outstanding traffic warrants or pending citations.
3. Applicant cannot have more than three (3) events (moving violations or at-fault accidents) in the proceeding thirty-six (36) months.
4. Applicant must show proof of disposition on all citations received within the previous one year from the court of jurisdiction.
